These stories are brought to you by Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei, a hapū (subtribe) of the wider Ngāti Whātua iwi whose ancestral lands are around the Tāmaki isthmus and Auckland (Tāmaki-makau-rau).

We at Titan Ideas are very passionate about cultural discovery. We are always doing a lot of research and development around mixed reality and are always exploring ways in which mixed reality is enhancing the user experience in education and storytelling. We formed a collaboration with Ngāti Whātua Orākei to bring their super heroes and cultural stories to life using the new medium of mixed reality enabled by our platform.
In the first phase of the project we worked with the talented youth from Ngāti Whātua Orākei and did a comprehensive research around the Maori creation story of Ranginui and Papatuanuku. It was an incredible process to see the talented youth from NWO write scripts, and come up with great musical compositions and choreography for the final story. During this process we also created storyboards and concept sketches to realise the vision of the team from NWO.
After seeing the beautiful songs and dance choreography prepared by the Waimarama we decided to go the motion capture route. It was a great mo-cap session as we not only captured the choreography but also introduced the youth from the iwi to this cutting edge technology to capture realtime animation. All the songs were recorded and mixed at the Department of Post with their amazing crew. Songs were sung and choreographed by Ngāti Whātua Orākei youth. Once the recordings were done we started with the modelling of all the assets for the story in 3D for integration into our platform to create the interactive AR stories.
The app was launched at Britomart in Auckland and received rave reviews and feedback from the community.
